5 Things You Need to Know About Spray Foam Insulation

Insulation has always been about saving energy, but recently, saving energy has become a big topic – so big, in fact, that many are now questioning whether or not their traditional fibreglass insulation is enough. That’s why they’re turning to spray foam, a newer form of insulation that promises more energy efficiency. But does it deliver?

The good news: it does. Spray foam insulation – when properly applied by an expert – saves a tremendous amount of energy. And although it costs a bit more than traditional insulation, it also offers more benefits than just energy savings.

If you’re still on the fence about spray foam insulation, take a look at a few key points to consider:

#1 Can reduce heating/cooling costs by up to 50%

As we mentioned above, spray foam insulation takes energy savings way beyond other insulations. Since every building is different, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly how much energy you could save, but it’s not uncommon to see 25%, 30%, or even 50% come off your monthly bill. With these lower energy costs, the initial higher price of spray foam insulation will start to look more manageable. In fact, it doesn’t take long for spray foam to pay for itself. One homeowner, who saved 33% on his first electric bill since installing the foam, projects that he’ll break even in less than three years.

#2 Improves indoor air quality

How? Spray foam insulation expands to fit everywhere, providing an airtight seal against the growth of mould, fungi, and bacteria – all big contributors to bad indoor air quality.

Plus, unlike fibreglass insulation, certain types of spray foam insulation will not retain moisture. This creates an environment that’s not hospitable to mould or fungus, and also reduces the chance of allergies.

#3 Increases Racking Strength and Reduces Noise

Increase the racking strength of timber framed houses by two to three times. Polyurethane spray foam will quieten your home from unwanted noise.

#4 Will maintain its properties for life

Over time, traditional fibreglass insulation will settle and flatten, creating gaps in the insulation. By contrast, spray foam insulation is a thermo set material, and it won’t change its form or shape. That means it will offer you the same benefits that it did on the day you had it installed – even years or decades later.

#5 Does not contain formaldehyde

Prolonged exposure to formaldehyde can also cause allergies. Traditional fibreglass insulation contains small amounts of formaldehyde, and while these levels are considered “safe,” why expose yourself to any amount of this chemical if you don’t have to?

If you want to eliminate formaldehyde from your insulation, go with spray foam – any good provider will use a mixture that does not use the chemical.
